frequently asked questions

Do I need to be registered for LeakyCon to apply?

No. This is open to anyone!

Can my mom write my letter of recommendation?

Sure, especially if she can turn a mean phrase. Keep in mind, however, that this may make it seem as though only your mom thinks you deserve the award. Try for a boss, teacher, coach, or someone outside your family who can vouch for you and your pursuits.

Can I send different parts of the application as I complete them?

Except for the letter of recommendation, all parts of your application need to be submitted together. We prefer letters of recommendation to be included with your other materials, but will accept them sent separately from your recommender until the May 1 deadline.

Scholarship Questions

I am attending a private high school. Can the scholarship funds be used for tuition there?

No. At present we are only awarding the scholarship for tuition at a college or university.

I am in highschool now but will be attending a university in the fall. Can I apply for the scholarship?

Yes! Indicate where you will be attending on the application. If you don’t know yet, leave that part blank, and if you win the award we will figure out the details then.

Are you just going to write me a check if I win?

Nice try. No, the check goes directly to the school’s financial aid and scholarship office and will be earmarked for your tuition.

Can I use the funds for anything besides tuition?

No. Funds are only for tuition.

Who decides the winner?

The winner will be selected by the LeakyCon management team.

May I apply for the scholarship if I am attending a school outside the United States?

Yes; we will work with universities around the world.

My transcripts are not on a 4.0 scale. Can I still apply?

Yes; when filling out your application, please convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale. A simple Internet search will yield many websites to help you with this.

Where do I go if I still have questions?

Email [email protected].

Fellowship Questions

I make macramé elf hats for SPEW. Obviously they aren’t digital. How am I supposed to make a digital portfolio?

You can take digital pictures of them and upload them to a site like Flickr. Or, if you sell them on a site like Etsy, just send us the link to your store.

Can a group of people sign up for the fellowship?

One person will need to be the applicant, but in the project description section the applicant can indicate that other people will be working on the project as well.

Can I submit a project that is in progress?

You will need to explain how you need the fellowship in order to complete the project.

Can I submit a project that I’ve already completed?

No.

Who decides the winner?

The winner will be selected by the LeakyCon management team, with the assistance of a panel of professional artists.
