a different kind of fan conferenceREGISTER NOW

LeakyCon 2014 is taking place from July 30—August 3, 2014 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida!

The idea for LeakyCon was born on the eve of what some said was the end of the Harry Potter fandom. It was 2007, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had just been published, and a small group of staff members from popular Harry Potter fan site The Leaky Cauldron sat in a crowded hotel room during Prophecy, a fan convention in Toronto, Canada.

Reliving their experiences from the weekend, the Leaky staffers, including LeakyCon’s future Executive Directors Melissa Anelli and Stephanie Dornhelm, decided that by combining their favorite aspects of existing conventions with the special feeling of community found within Leaky, they could plan a conference for Harry Potter fans that was unlike anything anyone had seen before. And so, LeakyCon was born.

The first LeakyCon took place two years later in Boston as a Harry Potter convention, and now, five conventions and two continents later, Leaky has grown with us as we’ve come to realize just how much we all truly have in common. In 2014 we will return to Orlando, a very special place for us, where we realized the immense potential for powerful experiences that occurs when you mix fandom, community, and belonging.

In past years, LeakyCon has hosted incredible talent, including Broadway veteran Anthony Rapp, many Harry Potter actors (Evanna Lynch/Luna Lovegood, Devon Murray/Seamus Finnigan, and more), and A Very Potter Musical creators Team StarKid. In addition to special guests, at LeakyCon you’ll jam out to rock concerts with the likes of Harry and the Potters, The Whomping Willows, and Hank Green. If you’re a fan of young adult literature, LeakyCon Lit (headed by New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson and Robin Wasserman) is perfect for you!

from the fans

Four years and five conventions have given us the amazing opportunity to provide guests with awesome experiences, friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime. See what some of our guests have to say…

My first LeakyCon was in Orlando in 2011. I had just finished my second year at University and had never attended a con before. Leaky was something I went into without knowing what to expect, besides this feeling in my heart that this would become a big thing in my life. I really had no idea just how true that would turn out to be. Leaky has become, in the most literal sense of the word, a homecoming. Every summer I look forward to seeing the faces of old and new friends, cosplaying as Ron Weasley and taking pictures with awesome people, and feeling this crazy amount of love and acceptance that I really think only exists when very special people come together to make magic happen. I can’t think of one single favorite part of LeakyCon, because it’s a thousand little parts together that make it so wonderful.

This summer will be my fourth LeakyCon at the place that started it all for me. I will just have graduated from teacher’s college, (hopefully) ready to help shape the minds of the next generation. I do not say this lightly: I truly believe that without my experiences as a leader in the StarKid community, the relationships I have built online, and my very treasured time at LeakyCon, I do not think I would be as excited about my future as an educator as I am today. Because I know I can help the world suck less. Because LeakyCon has shown me the awesome. I cannot say enough good things about LeakyCon. It is home for anyone who considers themselves a fan of anything, and I certainly hope to see many old and new faces in Orlando next summer. Turn around, bright eyes.

LeakyCon has helped me grow in so many ways. It’s helped me come out of my shell. LeakyCon taught me to love myself, and to revel in my Nerdom. Without LeakyCon, I’d just be Joe. But, with LeakyCon, I’m so much more.

charitable giving

LeakyCon is a charity supporting conference. We regularly benefit charities close to our mission of providing meaningful crossroads between stories, those who love them, and the people who create them. Past beneficiaries have included The Harry Potter Alliance, Book Aid International, Friends in Deed, Oxfam, Reading is Fundamental, Shelterbox, and many more. We also work with This Star Won’t Go Out, an organization that helps families of terminally ill children and was inspired by 16 year-old cancer patient and LeakyCon attendee Esther Earl, after whom our charity ball was named.

LeakyCon has been responsible for raising more than $300,000 for charitable causes in its short history. We aim to continue to use our conference to support these and more charities as our commitment to good works grows and deepens. You can read more about each organization on their websites.

charity row

Each year we also host Charity Row, a special area of the LeakyCon Marketplace where charities have the opportunity to showcase their causes in front of our active and motivated group of attendees. We are open to applications from all charities for the 2014 convention. Please drop us a line at [email protected] if you would like to bring your charity or recommend a worthy cause.
